More About Solden

A spectacular Austrian ski resort, hidden amongst the Ötztal Valley, its definitely worth learning more about Solden. The piste map will ensure you experience guaranteed snow; thanks to its excellent snowmaking system.  It’s a traditional ski resort that’s known for its party scene too, brilliant for holidaymakers from day to night.

Let’s Talk Skiing

Solden is a great resort that caters for skiers of all standards.  You’ll find a good variety of ski schools here to help improve your technique – or learn to ski.  Starting off at the nursery runs at Innerwald which you’ll find close the bottom of the Gaislachkogl gondola, it’s a good place to begin your ski journey.  The Solden beginners’ pistes are plentiful here – you’ve got 67km of blue runs, especially on the Tiefenbach glacier.  It’s also well worth trying the Blue 13 on Giggijoch which is particularly well-groomed and ideal for beginners.

Once you’ve found your confidence, Solden is well-suited to intermediates too.  You’ll find lots of reds to explore here, with 50km of ski area to choose from, including some superb descents.  Make sure you try the runs that take you back to the bottom of Giggijoch or from Hochsolden.  And definitely add the red route 1 from the top of the Gaislachkogl lift for its awesome near 1000m drop.  Solden isn’t just for beginners and intermediates, advanced skiers won’t be disappointed either.

Challenges for the most expert of skiers will be found on the Schwarze Schneide which takes you on a steep 15km descent to Gaislachkogl where you can expect a 2000m height change.  If off-piste is what you’re craving, head for Wasserkar which is accessible from the Gaislachkogl gondola.  Plus there are some great freestyling opportunities to be had at the massive Almdudler snow park if you take the chairlifts to Hainbachkar and Silb.  Here you’ve got 6 hectares of obstacles, including boxes, jumps and rails.

The Resort

If you’re looking for a really lively ski resort, Solden is definitely one for you.  With an impressive ski area that suits skiers of all standards, it then really comes to life at night with its huge party scene; one of the best in the world.  Particularly popular with Dutch and German groups, you’ll soon find yourself letting down your hair and joining in.  It’s also good for families though, with lots of facilities available for visitors of all ages.

Staying in Solden 

When you’re looking at Solden ski accommodation, you’ll find that some of it is quite spread out which is worth bearing in mind when you’re preparing for your visit.  You’ll also find that most of the places are to stay are the Solden hotels, the majority of these being good four-star venues with good facilities.  If you’re looking to travel on a budget though, you’ve also got some apartments and traditional Austrian pensions to choose from.

Snow Conditions 

There’s no denying that the Solden weather and snow conditions are excellent here.  The glaciers reach 3340m and most of the Solden piste map is over 2000m.  Not only this but they are well prepared for poor weather, with an excellent snowmaking system; it’s one of the best snow-sure resorts found throughout the Alps.  Traditionally, November is the lowest month for snow, with an average of 79cm to be found at the top.  At the other end of the scale, March is the best month with an average of 271cm at the top.

Resort Life 

For families. Solden has lots to enjoy off of the slopes too.  Featuring some great ski schools, a swimming pool, tobogganing and kindergartens, you’ll find they are well set up for younger visitors.  Food is excellent here, so make sure you try some of the fantastic Tyrolean specialities.  There are over 50 Solden restaurants, mountain huts and bars to visit, with lots of different types of foods to try. 

After the skiing is done though, this is where Solden really comes to life.  The bars and nightclubs in particular have an excellent reputation and are good value too.

What’s Good About Solden? 

We really like Solden with its excellent reputation for its snow reliability; a great place to make the most of the exceptional long runs that are available through this extensive resort.  Intermediates in particular will love Solden’s opportunities to experience some real adventure.  Solden also has an impressive lift system that makes getting to the slopes even easier.  You’ve got a good choice of huts for this resorts size.  And there’s no doubt that Solden really comes to life at night – in fact its après-ski/nightlife is legendary.

The SnowResort Verdict 

Solden is a great resort for skiers and a great benefit is that you won’t need to queue too much.  You’ll be able to use your Solden lift pass on their extensive lifts which have the capacity to take 68,000 snow lovers per hour.  There’s a great expanse of glacier skiing to enjoy, plus three peaks which reach over 3000m; so you won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a challenge.

It’s also widely known for its excellent calendar of events, especially the Electric Mountain and Gay Snowhappening, which are both huge festivals that welcome some of the biggest names in music such as David Guetta.  There also exciting weekly events such as the Night Ski show so you can be guaranteed an amazing trip to remember here at Solden.
