Travelling To La Plagne

Travelling To La Plagne

What should you consider when travelling to La Plagne? Should you fly, train or drive? What about bringing ski equipment with you, which way would be easiest when doing so? What’s the quickest way to get here? Or the cheapest? All very important questions… well we are here to help and provide you with everything you need to know about getting to your favourite resort!!

Flying

If you are travelling from outside of France, then flying into Chambery is the closest and the quickest way to get to La Plagne. La Plagne is then a transfer (taxi or minibus) or a bus ride away from the airport, you can always hire a car and drive yourself from the airport.

Chambery is the closest airport, 1h 31 mins away and all though it is the closest it has more of a limited number of flights than other airports. The next closest airport at Grenoble is a little further away at 2 h 13 mins, and is also only used in winter. Or another great option is Geneva which has great flight options and fantastic prices, around 2hr 30 mins away, but is worth weighing up against the closer airports as it has great flight availability and prices.

During the winter months (December to March/April) there are a higher number flights from the UK to the airports mentioned previously.

If you are thinking of having ski carriage then do not forget to check how much extra the airline might charge you and allow yourself extra time to get all your equipment checked in.

Once you have chosen your airport the only choice left to make is transfer or car hire.

Driving

Travelling to La Plagne byt the comfort of your own car is a great idea if you need or want more flexibility for your journey to the Resort and also getting around once you are in Resort. Enjoy travelling from the comfort of your own car, no stress over lost baggage or those pesky weight limits and no additional costs for ski/snowboard carriage.

When driving to La Plagne from the UK you have two options to consider on how to cross the channel, either hop onboard a Ferry from Dover enjoying the more relaxed sea air approach or use the Eurotunnel for convenience and speed (also avoiding that horrible sea sickness for those sufferers out there). Dover to Calais by Ferry is 1hr 30 mins and the Eurotunnel leaving from Folkestone to Calais is 35 minutes.

Once across the channel it then takes around 9hrs 25mins to drive to La Plagne by shortest route VIA the A26, this route has tolls, 73.50, so please remember that when budgeting for your self drive.

You may wish to stop along the way for an overnight to break up the long journey, something we recommend, especially if travelling with young children, there are plenty of good hotels and apartments to choose from and with easy access to many towns and cities along the route it makes stopping off easy.

If you want to drive straight through to resort but need a quick stop to stretch your legs, France has plenty of service stations and picnic stops along all available routes.

Train

The closest train station for La Plagne is Aime which is between 30-60mins transfer depending on which village you are staying in, once in the Resort.

If you’re travelling from the UK, the Eurostar operates a direct train to Aime from London St Pancras and Ashford during the winter season. The direct train leaves on a Saturday morning and arrives in Aime around 8 hours later. The return direct train leaves the following Saturday and takes around the same amount of time. Other trains are available from London/Ashford but require change overs and connecting trains, changing in either Paris or Lyon Part-Dieu, requiring then further changes in either Grenoble or Chambery and finally a further connection to Aime. Direct is definitely your best option because of this reason, but be warned tickets sell out fast.

Cross country trains connect Aime to Paris Charles De Gaulle or Paris Gare de Lyon on the TGV service taking around 5-6hours. Coming from Lyon Part Dieu the regional train takes 3 and a half hours to get to Aime. Trains from Geneva airport change in either Chambery or Lyon for your train to Aime taking you around 4 hours.
